Rubella is a disease caused by a “Rubella virus”. Red spots appear on the body like a rash during the illness. Rubella is also called German Measles and is wrongly considered by some to be " Measles in a mild form. "

  • When Rubella strikes a pregnant woman, it could be most serious, not for the mother, but for the child she is carrying.
  • During pregnancy the Rubella virus reaches the foetus and interferes in its growth and development.
  • Depending on the stage of pregnancy, this may result in an abortion or anomalous fetus.
  • But worse could be the state of the surviving infant so born who could remain disabled for life, with several handicaps.

  • The vaccine is recommended to every woman of child-bearing age.

  • Rubella has almost been eradicated in several countries by routine vaccination.
  • The vaccine is very effective and though individual responses will vary, protection usually lasts for up to 15-20 years.

  • There are three different stages at which the vaccine can be administered. I. All girls over the age of 9 years i.e. before puberty.
